Concrete ART Project 2024

The “Concrete Art Project” opened its doors in Dresden and Aachen again this summer vacation! As part of the CRC/Transregio/TRR280, children, young people, artists and scientists gave free rein to their creativity. We wanted to get young people interested in the topic of "Building the future with concrete" in a sustainable and creative way. The concrete art project is now in its third round, following the very successful kick-off events in previous years. We are delighted to be able to offer this interesting program for schoolchildren again this year, at least in Dresden.

Eine Ferienwoche mit Beton

From June 24 to 28, 2024, Dresden schoolchildren experienced an extraordinary summer vacation project week at Albrechtsberg Castle: the "Concrete ART Project 2024". During this exciting week, organized by the CRC/Transregio 280 of the Technische Universität Dresden and the Dresden Youth Art School, 21 young participants immersed themselves in the fascinating world of concrete. How strong is concrete - why do you need reinforcement? What does concrete sound like - can you make music with it?

Supported by scientific staff from Technische Universität Dresden and four dedicated Dresden lecturers, the young researchers found exciting ways of combining concrete with other materials and making it vibrate to produce sounds. A special highlight of the week was the visit to the carbon concrete house CUBE on the Technische Universität Dresden campus. The children experienced an exciting load test with unreinforced and reinforced concrete slabs and gained an insight into the future of building with carbon reinforced concrete. In midsummer temperatures, they busily poured, sawed, cut, folded, glued and decorated in the workshops of the youth art school and made new friends in the process.

At the end of the project week, the concrete creations made during the week were proudly presented to the numerous parents and grandparents in an exhibition. The project week impressively demonstrated how closely art and science can be linked and the creative potential of this combination.

The "Beton KUNST Projekt 2024" is a renewed cooperation between Technische Universität Dresden and the Dresden Youth Art School. The project week was accompanied by scientific staff from Technische Universität Dresden, who provided on-site support with their expertise, technical support and exciting experiments.

Creativity and science for kids

From August 5 to 9, 2024, children and young people were invited to experience a creative week at the Rolleferberg Youth Education Center. In cooperation with the Bleiberger Fabrik and the Werkwochen, this workshop offered young people the opportunity to experiment with concrete and realize their own creative ideas under the guidance of artists such as Andreas Robertz and Silke Franke.

The Concrete Art Project 2024 was enriched by the additional support of young scientists from the SFB/TRR280. These young experts from various disciplines, such as mathematics and structural engineering, imparted valuable knowledge to the participants. Hands-on experiments such as building a polyhedron out of paper, a hammer test for concrete slabs and Q&A sessions on bridge construction aroused interest in research and science. The aim of the CRC/TRR280 is to introduce children and young people to scientific concepts in a playful way and to encourage a lasting interest in these topics.

Finally, a small exhibition was curated with the children, which was later admired by parents, siblings and grandparents. Many thanks to everyone who helped and supported us.
